For Patrick Ciccarelli Varsitys founder and CEO starting a small business continues a tradition that is more than a century old (over 139 years). It all started in the mid-19th century with a simple family business outside the city of Naples Italy. But eventually Patricks great-grandfather Pellegrino Ciccarelli decided to leave Italy with his family in hopes of creating a better future in America. After immigrating through New York Pellegrino and his son successfully started several businesses including a hotel bar and restaurant until adversity struck and they lost it all in the Great Depression.
It wouldn#39;t be until later that his son PasqualinoCiccarelli the next in a line of entrepreneurs would start a men#39;s clothing store called The Varsity Shop.
Coming out of WWII on the GI bill Pasqualino would head to college; the first family member to do so. It was at college that he saw an opportunity—that young men now entering the workforce needed workplace attire. And so he started the next family business.
As Pasqualino set out to meet a need missing in the marketplace at the time so did his son Patrick see a need to help schools integrate use and manage technology. In the early 1990s while teaching at a public middle school in San Francisco Patrick found an opportunity to help the school bring technology to the classroom. Several years later this simple response to a need would launch a business that would last more than 22 years and to this day continues to evolve to meet the needs of the growing social impact space.
As a computer resource teacher Patrick saw firsthand how students found new opportunities by using computers. Technology helped them connect to the outside world; provided a place for them to develop a voice and share it; and offered a way to connect with others from different backgrounds and cultures. During this time Patrick also helped design and install networks in other underfunded public schools throughout the Bay Area.
In 1997 Patrick founded and ran an innovative program called The Cisco Networking Academy located at San Francisco State University. A newly-formed program within Cisco Systems Inc. the academy prepared students for careers in the IT industry. His academy grew to be one of the largest at the time with more than 20 participating schools spanning five counties. After running this program from 1997 to 1999 Patrick created Varsity.
