I have known that I wanted to be a designer since I was a freshman in high school and I have been working at it ever since. Of course it came naturally for me. My father was a creative director at a large regional ad agency and my brother works at that same agency as an art director. My surname Wright means to create or make something a fitting name for my family.
Another of my strengths is that I get things done. Too often I see potential clients with projects that are neglected or even ignored by their existing agency. They deserve better. I make sure that my projects are delivered on-time and on-budget. From start to finish my clients know they can rely on me and since I have experience in many different areas I know the hurdles that are coming up and can help my clients through the process.

When I graduated from college and started working as a professional graphic designer I had one goal in mind. I wanted to own a boutique graphic design firm with employees a cool office and everything that comes with that. I got it and more. For 13 years my partner Vic Wheeler and I ran Atticus Communications a boutique graphic design firm. We had employees a few cool offices and everything that comes with it. The ’it’ I soon learned was administrative functions. The bigger you get and the more work you get the more administrative work you do and the less design work you do. Its the ugly truth of business.
I Love To Make Things
I know every business person has probably participated in workshops read business books and hired life coaches as they search for the perfect niche for themselves. They search for that one thing that will help them focus on what they want to do. I was no different and I struggled as well. Then one day like a bolt of lightning it hit me. I love to make things. It was as simple as that. If I am not creating designs for clients I am making something. I create personal podcasts and artwork for sale. I wrote a book about my elementary school not because I would make money but I thought it would be fun. At home I am a serial do-it-yourselfer. There is not a room in my house that has not been altered or completely remodeled with my own two hands. I can only watch so much television or surf the internet before I get the itch to make something. So how does this relate to my business? I want to make something for you and you will know that while I am doing it I am putting my heart into it and enjoying the process.
Work/Life Balance
I work out of my house and have done so for years. Sure an office is impressive but one thing I noticed over the years is that no one cares if you have an office and if you did no one would come to it. I have had five office spaces over the years and only the first one impressed people because at the time an office meant you were legit. Of course they also were impressed by the dedicated fax machine.
Working out of my house allows me to be a part of my childrens lives as they grow to become adults. I am always here for them and can still serve my clients. If something comes up at school I take the time to be there. There is no stress because I can make the time up later that day or night and still meet my clients deadlines. While office hours are 8-5 they are fluid. I expect my clients to have the same work/life balance and am happy to work around their family calendar. Are your kids interrupting a business call? No problem I have been there myself.
Crystal Clear Communications
The only way we can successfully complete a project is if we speak openly and honestly and without any barriers between us. An open dialogue leads to better ideas leading to better design and ultimately growing your business. Its as simple as that.
Volunteering
Volunteering has been an important part of my life and a way to give back to the community that has given me so much. In recent years I have been an active member of the Boy Scouts of America. Not only leading youth in the program but teaching our adults leadership skills that help in the program and at work. I have also donated marketing and design services to other non-profits. It takes a commitment to be able to do this but I have found that volunteering my services and my time not only helps that organization but it recharges me and makes me do a better job when I get back to my clients.
Only Work For People Who Value What You Do
I wish I could remember where I first read this but I wrote it at the top of the whiteboard in my office and years later its still there. Its such a simple statement and one that I follow when working with clients. I have had less than pleasant experiences working for people who didnt value me or what I provided them and I should have declined the work.
You the client should follow this statement as well. You should not work with a design firm that does not value what your company does or what you do in service to your company. If the firm you are working with does not give you the respect you deserve you should find someone else. You deserve it and your company depends on it.
