Hello there and thanks for stopping by. My name is Katharine Tessier. I put my full energy into my work and it shows. Thats why Im Kilowatt Kate!
The quote that sums up what I strive for in my work:
I have worked in Toronto as an industrial designer since 2003. Ive produced work under the following titles; product designer transmedia producer and lighting designer. I also do design engineering and project management. I dabble in design exhibition design and curatorial work.
For a bit more detail about these things read on…
As a product designer I design develop and engineer decorative hardware that are mass-produced and available through major North American retailers and through commercial distribution.
As a transmedia producer I employ my skills as an industrial designer across not only 3D and 2D print elements but also digital and audio/visual elements to convey a complex story or message clearly and make it resonate. I lead amazing cross-functional teams to make these complicated products come together in 12-16 weeks. Ive developed eight titles for the Mysterious Package Company and new titles are in the works with a new brand.
As a lighting designer I treat every space as a canvas for great illumination. A well illuminated space is not only functional it is pleasing comforting safe and inclusive. I have been privileged to employ my skills to create great locally produced lighting solutions. My work includes lighting for Holt Renfrew Shoppers Drug Mart Toronto Botanical Gardens Body Blitz Spa and Beth Tivah Synagogue.
I try to get hands on with the making of things as often as I can. With this in mind I am a former member of Site3 Box 47 and now Im a member Artscape Daniels Launchpad.
Improving the relationships between local manufacturers local designers and the local economy as been a priority for me for many years. This desire led me to create Manufacturers + Designers Connect to foster more local design to be put into production locally too by simply changing how they work together.
Im a professional member of ACIDO (Association of Chartered Industrial Designers of Ontario) as well as on the Board of Directors serving as Director of Rocket. Rocket is the annual student competition of graduating Industrial Designers from degree granting schools in Ontario. I once competed…many moons ago. Im excited to be organizing this years competition!
