Hi my names Calum Macleod and I founded Big Surf Digital in 2013. I started working in SEO around 2007. I started off as a web developer working for a company designing and building websites. At one point I was offered a job in the SEO department to see if I took to it. SEOs were hard to find so the company was keen to train up new ones. It was supposed to be for a months trial but in that short amount of time I was hooked.
What I find fascinating about it?
Running an SEO campaign is a bit like playing chess against multiple opponents. But unlike chess you can only see some of your opponents moves. And to make it even harder the rules of the game are constantly changing. Getting your clients site more traffic from Google involves having a better overall site than all of your competitors whether that be more links better content or a website that converts better.
The best thing about it is when you meet a client after youve been working on a site for a while and sales and enquiries are starting to increase. I remember getting to sit in at a clients board meeting with a colleague a few years ago. The managing director stated that the sales from the website had increased year on year by 4 million pounds. We used to only deal with the marketing team at the company who didnt seem to want us to know this. I think maybe they thought wed slacken of if we did.
So how does that work? The website at the beginning of the campaign ranked at position 5 on Google for a particularly big search term relating to used cars. We pushed that keyword ranking up to number one and increased their positions for lots of other car related keywords. This resulted in an increase in website traffic and sales.
